Philadelphia Union II midfielder Christopher Olney Jr. has been named the MLS NEXT Rising Star of Matchday 12 due to his game-changing performance against Atlanta United 2.
The 16-year-old midfielder scored the only goal of the match to give Union II the 1-0 victory over the visitors and earning his side the three points last Friday at Subaru Park.
The first half of the game saw both teams unable to score, but Olney Jr. quickly turned the tide for his club in the second half. In the 57th minute, Nelson Pierre skillfully passed the ball to Olney Jr., who swiftly struck it into the back of the net, marking his third goal of the season. His impressive contribution didn't go unnoticed, as he was acknowledged as the Man of the Match after the game.
Olney Jr. had two goals under his belt before Friday's match with his first goal coming in a match against Orlando City B on March 26, while the second was scored against New England Revolution II on May 21.
Throughout his journey with Union II, Olney Jr. has made a significant impact on the field. He has accumulated a total of eight appearances, clocking in 692 minutes. Olney Jr. has also showcased his playmaking abilities this season by providing three assists, playing a pivotal role in his team's success.
Olney Jr. will look lead his team to victory once again during Matchday 13 when Union II faces off against Crown Legacy FC at home on Wednesday, June 14.
