St Louis CITY2 forward Brendan McSorley has earned the MLS NEXT Pro Goal of Matchweek 29 award, thanks to his stunning volley against Ventura County FC.
This marks the fourth time this season a CITY2 player has claimed the Goal of the Matchweek honor.
Other nominees included Philadelphia Union II’s Cavan Sullivan, Crown Legacy FC’s Nicholas Scardina, and NYCFC II’s Piero Elias.
McSorley’s award winning goal took place came in the second half of the match, with CITY2 trailing 2-1 in the 52nd minute. Hosei Kijima sent a lofted pass behind the VCFC defense, setting up McSorley for a first-time strike that found the back of the net.
Later, McSorley scored again in the 82nd minute, earning his first professional brace after coming on as a second-half substitute. CITY2 went on to secure their eighth road win of the season with a 3-2 final score.
In his debut season for CITY2, McSorley has tallied nine goals and one assist in 26 appearances. Before joining the team, the 22-year-old spent four seasons at Providence College, where he recorded 23 goals and five assists in 62 matches.
Although St Louis CITY2 has already clinched a spot in the 2024 MLS NEXT Pro Playoffs, they'll be looking to finish strong at home when they face Tacoma Defiance on Decision Day, October 6th, at CITYPARK.
