Austin FC II goalkeeper Damian Las has won the MLS NEXT Pro 2023 Save of the Year thanks to his outstanding diving save in their 3-0 victory over North Texas SC on April 12.
Holding on to a commanding 3-0 lead, Austin FC II gave up a free kick on the left side of their box, to which North Texas SC diagrammed a set play. Midfielder Theo Henrique launched a curler that seemed destined for goal, but Las’ quick reaction and outstretched arms proved superior, ultimately earning one of his 12 clean sheets.
The three-time Goalkeeper of the Month winner, Las, has had an outstanding first season in MLS NEXT Pro, starting in all 27 games he’s been featured in for Austin FC II, only giving up 20 goals for a goal-conceding average of 0.74.
The 21-year-old’s 12 clean sheets during the regular season are double that of his nearest competitor, and his save percentage of 79.2% leads all goalkeepers in MLS NEXT Pro who have played at least 15 games this campaign.
Las and Austin FC II will be gearing up to face Sporting KC II during the first round of the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro playoffs at Rock Chalk Park on Friday, September 29.
