STORYLINES

Playoff Spot Clash

After earning its first away win of the season in Matchweek 12 against Inter Miami CF II, Carolina Core FC overcame a resilient Orlando City B at home in midweek to earn another victory. The Foxes now have the chance to make it three wins in as many games when they host Chicago Fire FC II on Saturday, June 14. The two sides met only once last season, the result ending in a 2-1 defeat for The Core. However, Carolina Core FC’s dominant performance against Eastern Conference heavyweight Orlando City B gives The Foxes positive momentum heading into the match with Chicago Fire FC II. A CCFC win on Saturday would allow them to leapfrog Chicago in the Eastern Conference standings—right into a playoff position.

Player to Watch

Jathan Juarez led The Foxes to victory in the midweek clash against Orlando City B thanks to a powerful curling shot into the top corner. It was the defender’s first goal of the 2025 season, and it couldn't have come at a better time, giving CCFC its second win on the bounce. Juarez’s contributions in the match went beyond the goal, as he created a match-high two chances for his team and maintained an 87% pass accuracy (27 out of 31 passes completed). The 22-year-old’s creativity has been crucial for CCFC this season, as he’s completed 14 key passes (third-most on the team) and is on pace to break his record from last season (25 key passes). Juarez will look to produce more magic in CCFC’s matchup during Matchweek 14 against Chicago Fire FC II.

Chicago’s Five-Game Unbeaten RunChicago Fire FC II is currently on a five-game unbeaten run in MLS NEXT Pro, not having lost a match since the end of April. The Fire have been one of the more prolific teams in MLS NEXT Pro this year, scoring 16 goals over the past five games. The streak began with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Orlando City B, followed by a narrow 2-1 win against FC Cincinnati 2. After a 5-0 victory sandwiched in between two draws, Chicago travels to High Point to continue its fight for a playoff spot.

Midfielder Claudio Cassano currently leads Chicago in both goals scored (4) and assists (2), having started in all of the team’s matches in MLS NEXT Pro. The winger’s most recent contribution was a late equalizing goal to help earn a 2-2 draw against New England Revolution II. In addition to the 21-year-old’s goal contributions, Cassano has delivered a remarkable 31 key passes for his side, the third most in MLS NEXT Pro this season.
